United Poultry Concerns (UPC) is an organization which promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of chickens and other domestic fowl.
The founder and president of UPC, Karen Davis, Ph.D., uses her extensive first hand knowledge of all species of domestic fowl to educate people about their interesting personalities and social life. In pursuit of humane treatment of these bird, Dr. Davis is a tireless monitor of current poultry industry literature--including industry publications where most of the institutional cruelty is plainly revealed.
Dr. Davis is an activist. She organizes actions throughout the year, most notably her yearly "Spring Vigil for Chickens." She also fights in the trenches of Washington D.C., officially speaking at public hearings to promote legislation such as the Humane Methods of Poultry Slaughter Act of 1995 (H.R. 264).
Aside from the tireless work Ms. Davis does to chip away at inhumane practices toward poultry, this champion of our winged friends is also a most powerful orator. Make a note that:
KAREN DAVIS IS SCHEDULED TO SPEAK in New York City on November 1, 1995, 6:30 p.m. at the Metro Baptist Church, 410 W. 40th Street (btwn 9th and 10th Ave.'s). $10 includes catered vegan dinner ($5 w/o dinner). Ms. Davis will be available to sign books. Questions: call Jean Thaler @ 718-438-1523. (Jean's group, BIG APPLE VEGETARIANS, is the sponsor the event.)
